Relationship between romantic myths and attitudes towards gender equality in adolescence

Abstract
Gender inequality andviolence are serious problems that affect all cultures, whose origin is found in differential socialization and androcentric practices established in each society through different relational mechanisms. This cross-sectional study, with an ex-post-facto design, aims to determine the association between myths of romantic love and attitudes towards equality in a sample of 1,840 adolescents from Secondary Education in Castilla-La Mancha. The results report that more favorable profiles towards gender inequality accept the myths of romantic love to a greater extent. Furthermore, unfavorable attitudes towards coeducation at the relational level predict both the acceptance of the idealization of romantic love and the love-abuse bond. Finally, differences were found between men and women with a sexist profile in the greater acceptance of the Love-abuse relationship dimension. In conclusion, it is essential to incorporate the coeducational approach in the classroom in order to eliminate inequality and the assimilation of the ideology of romantic love, which is based on forms based on emotional dependence and on generating asymmetries in affective relationships.
