Abstract

Between 711 and 1085, Toledo counted as one of the major metropolises of the Islamic al-Andalus. Immediately after the re-conquest, all mosques of the city were signed over to the possessions of the church and were progressively adapted to new habits of the slowly growing catholic population. A building archaeological research firstly clarifies which of the churches show evidence for former mosques or Islamic fabric. Secondly it describes the nature of their transformation processes from mosques to churches. It was possible to prove Islamic remains in seven of the eleven investigated parish churches. Furthermore the shapes of the former, now disappeared mosques are sometimes reconstructable by means of the knowledge of the transformation process.
