Abstract

Recent rescue excavations at Seville (ancient Hispalis) have provided a massive amount of well-stratified ceramic materials of Roman times. Due to their informative potential for ancient trade in foodstuffs, transport amphorae are a remarkably important part of this ceramic record. Going through them, this paper aims to characterize this trade in Roman Hispalis from late republican times to Late Antiquity. A first draft of roman trade in Hispalis is offered, stressing not only qualitative aspects (like the kind of imported goods and their provenance) but quantitative ones as well (relative proportion of any commodity at any time, differentiating provenance areas).
