Abstract

Our aim in this article is to study a motif to emphasize the idea that the Umayyad caliph al-Walīd appears like a ruler, who is interested in devising both the Sassanid and the Byzantine court traditions. At the same time, the monarch acts like a promoter of a specific artistic language in the heart of the new Islamic power.
