Abstract

This study is devoted to an emerging term in the spoken Arabic of Mauritania, namely tlaḥlīḥ, usually meaning “gossip”, or “spreading gossip”. Its semantic content has been largely extended to gender relations in the Mauritanian society and generally to any form of transgression. Apparently, this connotation of the word tlaḥlīḥ has appeared less than ten years ago and its use is taking an increasingly important place in social relations.
