Abstract
For the double bass, the 19th century represents the beginnings of the development of the lowest instrument in the string family. Various factors contributed to the evolution, both in the technical capabilities of the instrumentalists and in the amount of attention devoted by composers to the instrument. This article focuses on the different elements that facilitated the development of the double bass during the 19th century (both at a technical and interpretative level) and resulted in the instrument being included in various combinations of chamber ensembles.
