Abstract

The present paper focuses on Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”. Fitting into the so-called “Graveyard School”, Gray’s melancholy masterpiece shows traces of both the patterning of Neoclassicism and the romantic aesthetics, which starts to emerge in the mid-eighteenth century. The pre-romantic poet covers universal topics, such as death, using an adorned style and elevating the melancholy feeling.
