Profiles and behaviour of trainee translators: a translation process research

Abstract

This article informs the results of a translation process research, that compares and describes the behaviour of translation students (who are in four different levels of their training) when faced with a problem and making decisions during the written translation from English to Spanish. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental study with exploratory purposes was designed. The process was observed through screen recordings, simultaneous verbalizations, and ex post facto questionnaires; and the acceptability of the product was evaluated.  An inductive analysis of the process data and a deductive analysis of the product data were carried out. Guided by Grouded Theory methodology, codes and categories that emerged from data were used to build a translation problems taxonomy, a translation decisions classification, and a decision-making arguments taxonomy from a process-oriented perspective. Based on the analyzed categories and a set of attributes, the behaviour and action, information-seeking, and problem-solving profiles of trainee translators were described.
