Abstract

This work focuses on the Philippines in the late sixteenth century and takes as central the first episode of the clash with Holland, starring Oliver Noort attack Manila in 1600. Competition of Spain and Portugal by the spice trade had been resolved through the 1529 Treaty of Zaragoza, Spain by the resignation of the Moluccas and permanent settlement in the Philippines since 1565. In 1600, Holland made their appearance in the Asian scene with a model of original colonial exploitation, through the company Dutch East Indies, and with an expansive power which led him to dominate throughout the seventeenth century a considerable part of the Portuguese settlements.
