LOSS, DISPERTION AND DETERIORATION OF HERITAGE: SAN FRANCISCO AND CAPUCHINOS CONVENTS IN MARCHENA

Abstract

The san Francisco and Capuchinos convents in Marchena provide a paradigmatic case for heritage studies. Both were founded during the modern age but disappeared as a consequence of several periods called “desamortización” (ecclesiastical confiscations) that took place all along the 19th century. This study aims to analyse them since a historical and artistical point of view, from their founding and rising until the fragmentation of the ecclesiastical goods. For the latter, the existent goods inventories are nearly the only documents that allow the investigation and identification of the dispersed heritage. Some of them will also be considered lost as a consequence of one of the most violent periods in the recent history, for Spain as well as for the global world.
