Abstract

The Emiral State consolidated its power through control of the most important cities of the Visigothic period, which allowed it to effectively govern its territories more effectively. Border capitals received delegations of Omayyad officials entrusted with the tasks of government (with particular attention to financial, judicial, and military affairs). A new elite residential architecture developed due to the presence of these officials and their subordinates, all of whom participated in the creation of the new state. We will focus on the archaeological evidence from Mérida, as this city offers examples of an architectural style that is linked to state power and that should, as a result, have its greatest expression in Córdoba.
