Integrating Neuroscience into CLIL for Early Primary Learners: Stimulating the Corpus Callosum to Support Learning
Main Article Content
Abstract
Recent advances in neuroscience are offering new ways to understand how children learn languages and how teaching can become more inclusive within Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) contexts. As bilingual education expands across Europe, addressing the diverse needs of neurodivergent learners has become increasingly essential. Research on brain development shows that neuroplasticity, executive functions (EFs), and interhemispheric communication, particularly through the corpus callosum (CC), play a central role in the growth of attention, self-regulation, and language during early childhood. When these processes develop atypically, as in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), children may encounter additional challenges in communication and participation. Embedding rhythmic, movement-based, and multisensory experiences into bilingual classrooms can enhance readiness to learn and promote engagement for all pupils. Building on these insights, the Bilateral Integration Programme designed in this work provides a year-long sequence of short, daily cross-lateral warm-ups that stimulate interhemispheric coordination and strengthen EFs. Rooted in neuroscience and aligned with European and Spanish educational frameworks, the programme offers a practical, inclusive model for supporting learning, attention, and wellbeing in early bilingual education.
