The Political Metaphysics of Abū Yaʿqūb al-Sijistānī's Kitāb al-Yanābīʿ: From Ontological Monism to Political Monism

Abstract

In the Book of Sources (Kitāb al-Yanābīʿ), Abū Yaʿqūb al-Sijistānī proposes a theoretical foundation for the Ismāʿīliyyah, a religious community that expresses itself as a political movement. This paper, meant for a reader who is new to the topic, seeks to show that the text’s political philosophy is born at the angle in which the synchronous vision of a Neoplatonic-rooted metaphysics and the diachronic vision of a Ismāʿīlī-rooted prophetology overlap.
