Physicians in the Ottoman Empire around 1800 according to the Descriptions by Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1767–1811): On Doctors, Surgeons, and Botchers

Abstract
Between 1802 and 18011 Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1767–1811), an explorer and medical doctor, travelled to several cities and regions of the Ottoman Empire, keeping diaries in which he detailed his scientific, ethnological, and quotidian observations. This article examines the image of physicians drawn by Seetzen with regard to the representation of the ‘own’ and the ‘other’ in the descriptions European and local doctors. It also considers the modalities of knowledge transfer and Seetzen’s role as a mediator between different cultures. The study shows the striking dividing line between native and Frankish physicians, Seetzen’s limited knowledge of Jewish and Muslim physicians, and the transfer of the European typology of academic doctors and medical practitioners to physicians in the Ottoman Empire.
