Abstract

The Italian Renaissance doctor Michele Savonarola, in his dietetic treatise On all the things which are eaten, examines different common foods in the diet of that period, describing their characteristics with interesting comments about social aspects related to them. Through the analysis of these observations, it is possible to see how what an individual eats and the way he eats defines his position in society. For Renaissance medical science the convenient diet is determined by the amount of exercise, which is directly linked to professional activity and therefore to the social stratum.
