Abstract
This article examines the challenges and progress in the implementation of the circular economy in the lodging sector in the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ). The research, exploratory in nature, used a mixed approach with quantitative and qualitative methods, and was based on expert interviews and surveys of 4- and 5-star establishments. The results indicate that while some establishments have adopted circular economy practices, significant limitations remain, particularly in resource and waste management. The discussion compares these findings with existing literature, highlighting the need for greater awareness and policies that encourage the transition to a circular economy in the tourism sector. Finally, it is concluded that, although progress has been made, there are also several barriers that limit sustainable development in the DMQ.
Keywords: Circular economy, sustainable tourism, Quito, waste management, ecological transition.
