Accommodation as a dimension of touristification: analysis applied to the southeast of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina (1991-2024)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution and spatial evolution of accommodation in the southeast of the Province of Buenos Aires. Given that the approach to touristification prioritizes the local scale, case studies, and intra-urban spatial units, the application of quantitative spatial analysis within a regional geographic framework is proposed, considering accommodation as a dimension of tourism. Using five statistical sources with national coverage, indicators such as annual intercensal growth rates, percentage variations, and averages of housing for potential tourist use and hotel and para-hotel establishments are represented and examined at the cartographic level. The study reveals a region with internal heterogeneity, with sources that demonstrate everything from the preeminence of the city of Mar del Plata in terms of the quantity and diversity of accommodations to the acquisition of a greater relative share by other destinations, including a case of comprehensive spatial redistribution. The research highlights aspects such as the disparity in the amount of official data on serviced and residential tourism, the harm caused by changes implemented between census surveys on comparative and longitudinal studies, and the need to triangulate with other sources and methods.
