Paul Auster and the Magic of Writing Other Worlds
Main Article Content
Abstract
Magic is a recurring element in Paul Auster’s narrative. Magical phenomena –linked both to the irruption of chance and to the power of memory, two other recurrent themes in his novels, and associated with certain very specific objects– make it possible to set in motion the functioning of stories within other stories, a characteristic device in Auster’s work. This article argues that a possible source for the presence of magic in his texts may be his evident interest in the thought of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, as demonstrated by the references to this thinker that appear in his literature.
