Abstract

Corpus-based linguistic approach is implemented in disciplines as dissimilar as translation (Baker 1993), discourse analysis, dialectology and variation, teaching of languages and linguistics, culture, grammar, stylistics, lexicography, historical linguistics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, social psychology, semantics, text linguistics, and sociolinguistics (McEnery & Wilson 2001: 104-130). Due to the wide range of uses of corpus linguistics, an absolute agreement has been reached with regard to neither the existing types of corpus, nor their denomination and definition. Therefore, the aim of this article is to offer a proposal for corpus classification applicable to any discipline. To this end, amongst the multitude of categorisations found, we were on the basis of those formulated by Sinclair (1996), Torruella Casañas and Llisterri Boix (1999), Laviosa (2002), Fernandes (2006), Borja Albi (2007), Cabré Castellví (2007), Villayandre Llamazares (2008) and Ornia (2015). In this way, eighteen parameters and forty-one types of corpus were delimited in our proposal. In conclusion, the present work provides a tool that standardises the corpus selection process so as to conduct linguistic studies and the teaching/learning of languages.
