Abstract

(The integration of the reality of migration in trainee translators and interpreters guided by empathy)

Abstract: Language, translation and interpreting are essential in guaranteeing the integration of migrants into society. Migration is a reality that needs our attention, especially when referring to refugees or people in vulnerable situations, since it eases their integration into the foreign country’s society. Hence, translators and interpreters need to understand that reality and be exposed to it to learn and discover new professional opportunities. This will require abilities that go beyond the course syllabus. In the present project, we therefore present a collaboration between Red Cross Castellón and students enrolled on the Translation and Interpreting (T&I) degree at Universitat Jaume I (UJI). The main goal is for students to understand this reality and learn to be empathetic to make them able to create didactic units and French and Spanish glossaries based on the most necessary linguistic skills for migrants. This MIGrant PROject (hereinafter, MIGPRO) is designed to boost abilities like empathy, which is key in the 21st century (Belenguer Cortés 2022), but also other essential abilities needed by professionals, like autonomy, decision-making and improvement of students’ working languages. Surveys will be carried out to determine if students have a migrant past and if this factor impacts on the didactic materials created, and we will also reflect on what is ultimately produced.
