Abstract

To begin with, I'll focus on the Dutch name Jan. Secondly, I'll analyze which Dutch compound words include the name Jan, as well as the semantic fields they can be grouped into. Then, I'll talk about the influence of this name into German and English. As regards the latter, the word Yankee will be explained in depth. I mean to draw conclusions about the sort of word it becomes part of and the situations that it's used in. Also, the degree of influence over the aforementioned languages will be discussed.
