Abstract

A review of different methodologies applied in the study of fine bookbinding over time is presented. To this end, we draw upon the vision of binding art in general treatises first, and specific manuals then. The change in the paradigm motivated by the 19th century bibliophile movement, and its impact on the subsequent 20th and 21st centuries studies, is discussed. Ultimately, we analyze the significance of new technologies in the research and dissemination of fine bookbinding, as they establish bonds with the semantic web and the virtual musealisation of books.
