The Contamination in the Commedia

Abstract

The phenomenon of the contamination in an overabundant tradition like that of Dante’s Commedia appears in various forms, depending on the context of the copying process of the mss., on the types of copyists and on the state of conservation of the witnesses. Through a review of the different categories of contamination identified by critics (extrastemmatic contamination and contamination, contamination by lessons and by juxtaposition, sporadic, thick and full contamination,) - integrated with some additional proposals designed specifically for the Commedia (internal and external contamination, hybrid contamination, simple and stratified contamination), the essay aims at giving a comprehensive picture of the problem, together with examples and proposals for solutions or at least useful tips to overcome the obstacle.
