New Contributions to the Problem of Political Augustinism and the Theoretical Origins of Modern Statehood

Abstract
Following Eric Voegelin, one might ask whether Political Augustinism contributed to the de-divinisation of temporal power or, on the contrary, laid the foundations for its modern redivinisation. The chronicle Historia de duabus Civitatibus by Otto of Freising is a paradigmatic text which would allow us to resolve this question, since in it the author develops the theory of the civitas permixta, that is to say, the mixture of the two Augustinian cities in history. Being a 12th century thinker, such a concept seems to arise from a certain inherited cultural heritage which manifests itself in the form of symbolic concepts. One of these concepts is that of rex et sacerdos, and it is key to understanding Otto of Freising's political thought and to discovering in it, if possible, certain principles that could have served as a foundation for the construction of modern statehood in later centuries.
