The Divine Darkness in Dionysius the Areopagite and Bonaventure

Abstract
This study aims to present some key insights for understanding the notion of divine darkness in the thought of Dionysius the Areopagite and Saint Bonaventure. This notion is linked to the kind of knowledge that can be gained concerning the ineffable nature of God, where the intellect loses prominence, and union and affection gain importance due to the excessive nature of the known object. Special attention will be given to the Mystical Theology of the Areopagite and Bonaventure’s Itinerarium Mentis in Deum, as these two highly significant works allow for a rich comparative reading, revealing both commonalities and essential differences.
