Saint Augustine’s Positive Understanding of Forgetting: The Renewal of the Image
Main Article Content
Abstract
The reflection on memory is one of the most important contributions of Saint Augustine of Hippo to philosophy, which has aroused particular interest in the studies of recent years. Forgetting, however, has not been considered as such. The aim of this article is to show that Augustine does not only consider forgetting as a deprivation, but also has a positive understanding of forgetting, which is essential for the renewal of the human spirit’s image of God. This study will look at forgetting in the context of the Trinitarian dynamic of the mind, in relation to the intellect, the will and memory.
