Abstract

This paper examines the foundations of intercomprehension (IC) and its potential application in the training of interpreters working with the Spanish-Italian language pair. After defining IC as a form of plurilingual communication based on mutual understanding between speakers of different languages, the study explores its theoretical and didactic principles, with particular attention to partial competences, metacognitive strategies, and positive transfer between related languages. A brief overview of the main IC projects and research initiatives is also provided.

The paper focuses especially on the potential of IC to enhance listening comprehension, active listening, linguistic awareness, and interference management in interpreter training. Finally, practical examples are presented showing how IC can be applied during the documentation and preparation stages of interpreting tasks, highlighting its value as a tool for developing linguistic, strategic, and metacognitive competences in plurilingual contexts. The present contribution expands upon and illustrates a preliminary hypothesis put forward in González Rodríguez (2023).
