Abstract

This paper focuses on the information and communication technologies (ITCs) and its impact on academic performance in the teaching and self-learning of the English language in higher education students, taking into account its scope and limitations presented in the context that the student is within the Institutions of Higher Education (IES) that are developed in the universities of Zone 4 of Ecuador. Within this approach, three essential objectives will be presented and critically evaluated. Firstly, a diagnosis will be made of the level of knowledge of university students about ICTs that facilitate the teaching and self-learning of the English language. Secondly, it will assess academic performance with the use of ICTs in the teaching and self-learning of the English language. Secondly, it will assess academic performance with the use of ICTs in the teaching and self-learning of English by students in higher education. Thirdly, it will identify weaknesses and strengths arising from the use of ICTs to promote the teaching and self-learning of English in Higher Education. The knowledge generated will also serve as a means of understanding that the correct use of ICTs in teaching at HEIs can promote self-learning of the English language.
