Abstract

Nowadays, patient information leaflets´ translation is one of the most frequent scientific-technical translation briefs. Nevertheless, it is an undoubtedly difficult task, derived from the lack of uniformity in the presentation and organisation of each section. In order to achieve this task, the knowledge macrostructural (and textual) features of this kind of leaflets becomes essential. That is the reason why we analysed the macrostructure of a bilingual corpus consisting of 40 patient information leaflets: 20 in Spanish language and 20 in English. Our analysis results show striking macrostructural divergences in the biomedical genre researched in the aforementioned linguistic couple. We suggest that the knowledge of the macrostructural differences of a complex text genre such as the patient information leaflet contributes to facilitating its bi-directional translation: direct (English-Spanish) and also reverse (Spanish-English).
