Durante siglos la suplicación se convirtió en el recurso que podían interponer los litigantes contra las sentencias que, al haber sido dictadas directamente por el rey o por sus jueces y tribunales superiores, no eran susceptibles de apelación y, por tanto, a priori debían estimarse firmes e inatacables. Ya en el siglo XIX, las abiertas críticas doctrinales, que veían en la suplicación una simple artimaña que utilizaban muchos litigantes maliciosos para dilatar los procesos en los que estaban inmersos y la generalización del recurso de casación, provocaron que aquélla perdiese todo su protaginismo, lo que se comprueba en la escasa acogida que recibió en las diversas leyes de enjuiciamiento que vieron luz por entonces
