The eradication of Islam in the Hispanic kingdoms after the conquest of Granada, along with the suppression of religious and legal pluralism, were key foundations in the Catholic Monarchs' creation of a centralized modern state. Today, the European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence permits the restriction of public religious expressions when they clash with the social values enshrined in the Convention. This article examines the parallels between these historical periods, emphasizing the shared underlying logic in their efforts to achieve social cohesion through ideological homogenization.
