Abstract

In the collective imagination, philology is often seen as one of the auxiliary sciences of history. However, the reality is that language is a depiction of the past, its photograph, which forms the foundation upon which the future is built.
We observe the reality of the 21st century, the first quarter of which is defined by the accelerated pace of technological revolutions tied to advancements in computing. The consumer society that characterizes it views this speed as its modus vivendi, where the ephemeral has become the norm, and it turns to the Humanities to satisfy its thirst for immediacy. This, in turn, is leading to an uncertain, unsustainable, and ultimately finite future. This special issue arises precisely from the need to engage in a dialogue in the present in order to contribute a small but meaningful effort against the destruction of the future.
