Abstract

It may safely be said that Andalusi Arabic, as well as the other modern Arabic dialects, is the result of the evolution of Old Arabic stock interfered with foreign elements in a given socio-linguistic environnrent. The aim of this paper is to offer an outline of the phonological shifts (there are semantic shifts in some loanwords) which Andalusi Arabic seems to have received in the period of its linguistic formation. In order to clarify this process we also refer to the primitive phonemes represented in Classical Arabic.
