Ethology of media literacy in the twenty-first century´s digital society

Abstract

Information and communication technologies have become key elements for the construction of a digital society model that is indispensable for overcoming the socioeconomic challenges posed by the Covid-19 health crisis. In these coordinates, it is necessary to claim a concept of media competence that not only covers the development of instrumental skills in the use of digital tools, but also includes critical perspectives. With this in mind, a documentary review is carried out, first exploring the role and repercussions of the dominance of screens in a society called the spectacle, to continue with a journey through the historical development of media education that helps us to present and contextualize perspectives relevant from which this construct has been addressed. Finally, we describe the characteristics that communication competence needs in current times to continue betting on the empowerment of citizens for the sake of the constitution of an information society that safeguards democratic values
