Abstract

The conflict between farmers and ranchers was one of the main problems that the US authorities had to deal with during the years of border expansion. The land as a way of life, understood from a double point of view: as farmland and as a transit area and pasture, led the first settlers of the American West to fight legal battles. In The Westerner, William Wyler presented this conflict as part and background of a story of love and justice, where the land, as an element of union and future, ends up winning. Among all the sections that shape this concept, Dimitri Tiomkin's music plays a fundamental role. Its analysis within the context of history and the cinematographic genre helps to construct meanings and to transmit in a more effective way the struggle for a livelihood, and for the future.
