Abstract

The article studies the pragmatic explicitation in the Spanish translation of Chinese idioms, based on a translation corpus built with 551 chengyus (idioms) extracted from six modern Chinese literary works and their respective translations in the Spanish target texts. We combine the quantitative corpus study method with the qualitative analysis. The result shows: (1) the translators perform the pragmatic explicitation using the measures of direct explicitation, equivalent translation, simplification and concretization; (2) pragmatic explicitation is universal in its translation into Spanish, due to the characteristics of Chinese idioms in the semantic structure; (3) the factors that influence the degree of explicitness include the semantic complexity of the chengyus, the translational orientation and the subjectivity of the translator. This work complements the studies of the pragmatic explicitation and the translation of those words with rich cultural connotations.
