Abstract

Analysis of the dual figure of Democritus and Heraclitus in Baltasar Gracián's work, within El Criticón in particular. Gracián's use of the couple of philosophers (the crying philosopher and the laughing philosopher) lead to a style as well as a thinking figure. Embodiment of paradox, the figure of Democritus and Heraclitus define a constant back and forth dynamics - main Jesuit writing characteristic - between two extreme and opposite attitudes: laughing and crying. By way of alterutrum, already defined in the Criticón as a world code, the figure of philosophers is a useful tool in order to analyse and understand Gracián's universe.
