Abstract

This article presents a study of the research literature reported by the Scopus and WOS databases regarding virtual reality and education. This study aimed to analyze the research literature published between 2016 and 2020. The researcher used the bibliometric literature review approach, which was based on the analysis of predefined indicators and completed with a qualitative synthesis of its content. The research outcome reflected the existence of significant interest from the scientific community to deepen the study of virtual reality and education. The research literature has been increasing progressively every year, 2020 being the most prolific year so far. Most of the institutions and authors are from the northern part of Europe. Therefore, this region reflects the most interest in the educational use of virtual reality. In the same sense, Chinese and Canadian institutions show an outstanding increase of research in recent years. Conclusions in this study demonstrate that virtual reality is an emergent educational technology, which is still limited by its cost and its technical complexity for teachers to use. However, its value lies in the significant didactic improvement in terms of motivation and meaningful learning.
