The Melody of the Absent Woman: The Case of the High and the Mighty (William A. Wellman, 1954)

Abstract

The woman, part of the classic film narrative, has been an object of study as a stereotype and creation of the male gaze, absence being one of the key concepts as a direct cause of both situations. Absence as a characteristic of female characters has been modeled based on concepts from semiotics, psychoanalysis and feminist theories, resulting in a construction that is somewhat biased from a methodological point of view. A bias that has been alleviated with the contributions of film music theory, where absence takes on new meanings that complement, complete and even refute certain conceptual nuances. Given this, the present work proposes, through a case study, two objectives. On the one hand, establish a categorization of the absence, which can be analyzed based on visual and auditory elements. And on the other hand, study the case from a musicological perspective through Dimitri Tiomkin’s score for The High and the Mighty (William A. Wellman, 1954).
