Forms and discourses of Nicolas Winding Refn: "Too Old to Die Young" (2019)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Building on the rise of television fiction and its intersections with cinema, this article seeks to identify the aesthetic and system of signification deployed by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn in the series Too Old to Die Young (Prime Video, 2019), a neo-noir narrative co-written with screenwriter Ed Brubaker that uses the format’s extended running time to intensify strategies already established in Refn’s earlier feature films to their limits. The analysis focuses on the stylistic traits that shape three key features that defined classical noir: mise-en-scène, narrative temporality, and the intrinsic violence associated with criminal worlds, as well as the resignification of the femme fatale myth, which radically alters the discursive thrust of Refn’s proposal.
