French popular science magazines: a resource for teaching translation

Abstract

By definition, popular science magazines disseminate the scientific activity of a country. They are multidisciplinary and place researchers closer to sectors with some academic information, to the general public, to segmented publics or to sectorial audiences. With this orientation, they are written in accessible language, appropriate for the target public, with a written discourse that fully exploits narrative, grammar and literary resources, as well as the resources of both general and investigative journalism specialized in science and technology. The aim of our paper is to show how these publications constitute a valuable teaching resource to initiate the student in the translation of French and Spanish scientific-technical texts, in order to provide them with linguistic and extra-linguistic competences and with procedural and declarative knowledge required for the translation of this text typology
