In the shadow of death in the images of the conquest of America: Theodore de Bry and colonial spectacularization

Abstract
The article analyzes images associated with death in Theodore de Bry’s America. The hypothesis holds that these engravings perform a double function: on the one hand, they legitimize violence by inscribing death within a narrative of indigenous “barbarism”; on the other, they reveal the fragility of European rule. The study introduces the concept of colonial spectacularization, a visual-rhetorical regime that turns events into spectacle in order to shape reception. In this way, it foregrounds ambiguity, exploring the capacity of these representations both to justify and to problematize the conquest. Methodologically, it combines iconographic-iconological analysis with visual rhetoric across a corpus of fifteen plates, attentive to their confessional circulation and contemporaneous sensibilities toward death. The results point to an unstable reception, subject to disputes and resignifications, and nuance generalizations about rule, evangelization, and alliances.
