Abstract

One of the most interesting chapters in the controversy over Góngora is that which has been named by critics the "epistolary correspondence between the circles of Lope de Vega and Góngora", which includes the testimony Respuesta a las cartas de don Luis de Góngora y de don Antonio de las Infantas. In this document, among other things, allusion is made to a series of poems related to the defense of the Polifemo and the Soledades; early critics of Góngora identified the poems alluded to bearing in mind the date assigned to the testimony. Nevertheless, due to the most recent contributions made to the study of the controversy over Góngora, it is clear that those poems identified by early critics cannot be those which were actually mentioned in the original testimony. Therefore, we will try to demonstrate why these compositions cannot have been those mentioned in the testimony, and which could be those that really are mentioned.
