Feminisms, Ethics, and Translation in the Spanish Version of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, by Lola Shoneyin

Abstract
In this paper, we aim at examining the recreation in the Spanish translation of female subjectivities evident in the novel The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives (2010a), by Lola Shoneyin. The Spanish version has been carried out by the Argentine translator Federico Vivanco and published by Libros de las Malas Comparñías (2022) in Spain. Based on the examination of subjectivity in (translated) literary discourse (Amossy, 2009; Amossy and Pierrot, 1999; Spoturno, 2019, 2017, 2022), we analyse the construction and materialization of feminist discourses on issues related to polygamy, motherhood, and infertility of contemporary Nigerian women (Amadiume, 2001, 1987; Oyèwùmí, 2003, 1997). More specifically, we are interested in analysing the way in which these feminist discourses are interpreted in the translated text. Likewise, and within the framework of transnational feminist translation theory (Castro and Spoturno, 2020) and editorial translation, we address the way to ethically translate the postcolonial and translingual literature in which Shoneyin's novel is framed (Tissot, 2017; Ergun, 2021; Vidal Claramonte, 2021). We also observe the incidence and limitations of editorial and translation policies on the translator's agency possibilities (Bein, 2005, 2002; García de Vinuesa, 2018; Villalba, 2021; Wolf, 2014). In this way, we explore the feminist positioning of the translator in the face of editorial policies that can limit translation ethics when translating feminisms.
