Abstract

The functional words don´t have concrete lexical meanings. However, they have an unquestionable importance in all the languages and the Classical Chinese is not an exception (Chen, 2006), because they serve as articulators between words with full meanings. The emptiness in lexical meaning of this kind of words adds difficulty to translation, since it is hard to determine its precise meaning within the context and find its equivalence in the target language. The aim of the present work is to investigate how the most frequent functional words in Romance of the Three Kingdoms are translated. With the help of the ad hoc corpus and the statistics knowledge, we selected representative examples that contain the words in question. Then, we analyzed them parting from the functional words theories and the conceptual bases of Newmark-semantic translation and communicative translation. As a result, we elaborated a glossary where the studied functional words and their possible translations can be visualized. This glossary could be interesting for scholars who want to translate classical Chinese works into Spanish.
