El (invisible) papel de los traductores e intérpretes durante la COVID-19: estudio de las publicaciones de El País

Abstract
Abstract: The social and media knowledge/acknowledgement of translators and interpreters has been a subject of study of interest in recent years within the professional group. Several studies (Campos and Fernandes, 2011; Cedillo, 2017; Sldl Bah, 2015) have investigated the media presence of translators and interpreters in Spain, and all of them have concluded that their treatment by the mass and social media is very limited. As they underline, Spanish newspapers, in particular, do not give much space to translating and interpreting activities. However, both activities have been particularly put to the test in recent months. During the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, translators and interpreters have been (and are) responsible for safeguarding the right to communication/information on equal terms for all today's multicultural and multilingual societies. The role they have played (and still play) in breaking down communication barriers in a period of global health crisis has been (and continues to be) essential for the understanding of the events by allophones. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the role that translators and interpreters have been given in this scenario in Spain's most popular newspaper. To this end, the texts published by El País on translators and interpreters from 14 March 2020 to 14 March 2021 will be analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The textual corpus, extracted from the newspaper's digital archive, will make it possible to discover the scarce content published by El País during a year on translators and interpreters and the invisible role they have played during COVID-19 for this media.
