Abstract

This study consists of the text analysis and the commentary in the translation process of three scientific dissemination texts about astronomy written by French astronomers from the 19th century: Exposition du système du monde, by Pierre-Simon Laplace, Sur la planète Neptune, by Urbain Le Verrier, and Astronomie populaire, by Camille Flammarion. Our aim is to analyse and solve the difficulties that scientific, technical and historical texts poses and to produce a correct translation from the terminological, linguistic and pragmatic point of view. Due to the extension of the originals, we have chosen a series of extracts about different subjects, although astronomy is the base of the whole work. Our methodology begins with a theoretical approach about the main characteristics and difficulties of textual typologies. The second part is the text analysis; we also justify some of the translation decisions that we made in our proposal.
