Genetics dictionaries and glossaries in German language

Abstract
In a globalised world in which translation is becoming more and more present, its practice is often linked to the knowledge of a specialised field. Therefore, the professional translator must conduct research and be prepared to work with that specialised information. In this study, we approach the field of knowledge of genetics, that encompasses different disciplines such as medicine and biology due to its complexity and breadth. Nowadays, there are many resources that can be found on the internet for specialised research. In the first part of this paper, we present a selection of German-language dictionaries and glossaries on genetics, which are freely available on the internet and can help the translator understand the concepts of a specialised text. As will be observed by their heterogeneity, some of these resources are informative in nature, while others are more specialised; some are written from the perspective of medicine, while others are based on biology; some are large encyclopaedic dictionaries, while others are small glossaries. However, their common aim is to bring the terms and concepts of genetics closer to the interested reader, either in an informative way (for the student or the layman) or in a more specialised way (for the professional and the researcher). Secondly, we analyse to what extent hard copies of medical dictionaries published in the German and Spanish language pair can be useful for the translator when dealing with a specialised text on genetics. After the analysis, we conclude by highlighting which of the compared dictionaries is the most comprehensive.
