The 20th century female artist in narrative cinema
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines the biographies of 20th-century female visual artists, whose stories have been told in non-documentary films, such as Frida Still Life (1984), Frida (2002), Camille Claudel (1988), Camille Claudel. 1915 (2013), Carrington (1995), Séraphine (2008), Georgia O'Keeffe (2009), Big Eyes (2014), The danish girl (2015), Paula (2016), or Maudie (2017). It highlights the technical and conceptual characteristics shared by these examples, the differences from those of male artists, the cinematic techniques used and their significance, as well as the pictorial or sculptural references employed and their purpose. It also examines the most notable aspects of the protagonists’ lives and their inclusion in the artist’s legend, in terms of meaning, and the revival of some of these films in later cinema.
