Collaboration between artists and researchers: how can we work together?

Abstract
This article examines research-creation, an «indiscipline» (Suchet, 2025) that has recently been gaining ground in the humanities and social sciences in France, following its establishment in the arts and literature. Research-creation brings together ways of approaching reality that for a long time remained separate or subordinate to one another. It aims to redefine methodologies and epistemologies, to experiment through dialogue between artists and researchers, and to engage in dialogue through shared experiences. It also promotes artistic practice as a means of research to create new objects of study and to disseminate knowledge. The first part reviews the international origins of research-creation, its belated introduction in France, its nascent institutionalisation, and the challenges it poses. The second part focuses on a specific case: the Franquicias postales project, which brings together a group of researchers from Paris 8 University with the filmmaker Carolina Astudillo, with the dual aim of producing a documentary film and an installation on the Spanish Republican exile and the French concentration camps. This research-creation project forms part of the CAREXIL-FR programme, which studies letters from these camps.
